Josh Doan arrived in Tempe as the biggest recruit in the Arizona State Sun Devils hockey program’s brief history.
His pedigree as the son of Shane Doan was a close rival to Austin Lemieux’s thanks to the elder Doan’s saintlike reputation in Arizona. Combine that with on his on-ice prowess in the USHL prior to being selected early in the second round by the Arizona Coyotes and you have the recipe for an incoming superstar.
Doaner did not disappoint as he went on to set the school record for points in a season by a freshman with 37 points in 35 games.
His freshman year coincided with Arizona State’s final season at Oceanside Ice Arena before the big move to Mullett Arena in 2022-2023.
Arizona State revealed their “storm” or “desert storm” gray jerseys in December 2019.
The jerseys were essentially a reverse version of the maroon away jerseys that been adopted in 2018. They did feature one unique addition in the form of a subtle nod the Arizona state flag on the upper part of the sleeve behind the sleeve numbers.
ASU wore these sweaters in six games in 2021-2022 (10/8, 10/9, 10/30, 12/10, 12/18, 1/7).
Josh Doan wore this particular sweater in five of those six games. He did not wear this sweater on January 7th, 2022 as he had changed his number from #91 to #94 to honor the passing of local hockey legend Matt Shott.
Doan scored 1 goal and had 3 assists in those five games.
The one goal was scored against Denver on October 9th, 2021 and happened to be his first collegiate goal which makes this a special jersey and also makes a pair.
I have the jersey worn during Josh Doan’s final collegiate goal before turning pro, as well, so these two sweaters are the bookends of the ASU portion of his career.
Josh Doan’s gray gamer has solid visible wear for the five games it saw action.
The right sleeve has a board burn or two and the left sleeve also has some burns, including a very large stick slash/burn just below the sleeve numbers. This large slash has led to the only photomatch of the jersey from the Colorado College game on December 18th, 2021.
There are no marks on the front with the exception of one small pull.
The back shows loose threading on the nameplate and a small slash on the back #1.
Doan’s jersey also shows a 3-4” slash mark next to the bottom loop of the #9 that is partially unrepaired cut.
