Ty Murchison spent four years at Arizona State playing hard-nosed, defensive hockey.
The California native played in 145 games for the Sun Devils, scoring 9 goals and 14 assists in his college career. He also finished a +17 despite carrying a tremendous amount of defensive responsibility for ASU.
His hard work in his own zone earned him the NCHC’s Defensive Defenseman of the Year award in 2024-2025.
Murch signed with the Philadelphia Flyers after completing his senior season at Arizona State.
Arizona State introduced these Barry Bonds era ASU baseball sweaters just prior to the start of the 2022-2023 season and wore two sets of them that year.
The first set was worn in the inaugural set of games at Mullett Arena on October 14th and 15th, 2022 against Colgate and featured an inaugural season at Mullett Arena patch on the right breast. ASU also wore a second set in three more games that did not have the patch.
Murchison wore this jersey during that opening weekend at Mullett Arena during his sophomore season. It is photomatched to both games.
ASU won the first game over Colgate, 2-0, and lost the second game 4-0. Murchison didn’t tally a point and finished the weekend even in plus/minus.
This jersey has a significant amount of wear for just two games.
There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-6 repairs, depending on how you count the large cluster of repairs on the elbow. There are also still a few unrepaired holes on that same elbow.
Other, lighter wear can be found throughout with some loose threading and a light stick mark or two.
The other notable feature on this jersey is the aforementioned “Inaugural Season at Mullett Arena” patch.
These patches were only worn for that single weekend and feature “A” mountain and the rays of sunlight found in the Arizona state flag in the background of the patch.
The inaugural season patched jerseys are pretty hard to come by.
This one, from one of the school’s most important players in the program’s first decade in DI hockey, is one of the favorites in my collection.
