Matthew Kopperud 2021-2023 Arizona State Sun Devils Maroon Set

April 28, 2024 in Arizona State Sun Devils

Matthew Kopperud was one of the most impactful players to wear the maroon and gold at Arizona State University.

When Kopperud committed to ASU, head coach Greg Powers had high praise for the incoming forward. “Matthew Kopperud is a kid who loves to score,” Powers said. “He’s willing to pay the price and go to the dirty areas unlike so many players today who don’t. Since the inception of our program, he’s made it clear that he wanted to be a Sun Devil and that’s the kind of kid we want.”

Kopp did not disappoint, scoring 64 goals and 43 assists in four seasons as a Sun Devil. He finished his collegiate career all over the Arizona State record book.

Kopperud is now second in goals scored (64), second in points (108), first in game-winning goals (11), first in power player goals (41), and tied with Johnny Walker for the most goals in a single-season with 23.

Arizona State introduced their new maroon away jerseys prior to the 2021-2022 season. The jerseys, along with a new white home jersey, were the beginning of the third generation of sweaters worn by the Sun Devils since their inaugural season as a Division I program.

ASU wore their maroon jerseys in 10 games in 2021-2022 and 16 games in 2022-2023. Each player is issued one jersey of each style for their time at ASU, so the jerseys are worn for however long the player is with the program and the style of jersey is worn on the ice with few exceptions.

Matthew Kopperud wore this Maroon Set game worn jersey in both the 2021-2022 and the 2022-2023 seasons.

Kopperud wore this jersey in 9 games in the 2021-2022 season, scoring 7 goals and 3 assists for 10 total points. He also wore it in 12 games in the 2022-2023 season before a season ending injury, scoring 5 goals and 2 assists for 7 total points.

In total, Kopp wore this sweater in 21 games where he scored 12 goals and 5 assists across the two seasons the maroon jerseys were in rotation.

Matthew Kopperud’s jersey has moderate wear which is mostly found in the sleeves.

There is one repair and a few light burns on the right sleeve. The sleeve numbers also feature long loose threading which is not surprising given it is single-layer twill. On the left sleeve, there is a repair cluster that partially covers an unrepaired hole. There is also a rather large board burn hole that appears to be glue patched. Other snags and burns are also found on the left sleeve, along with several long loose threads in the sleeve numbers.

The front of Kopperud’s sweater is clean and shows no significant marks or wear.

On the back, there is a large snag/pull in the dimples of the left shoulder. No other marks or wear is visible beyond loose threads in the back numbers.

These sweaters were the first (alongside the white home jerseys) to feature tagging in the back hem. This one states that the jersey is an Arizona State Authentic Game Jersey.
