Phoenix Coyotes legend Shane Doan wore this alternate gamer throughout the 2010-2011 season.
Doan and the franchise were in the midst of their most successful on-ice period, which culminated with a Pacific Division Championship and Western Conference Final appearance the following season.
The captain had a solid season offensively with 20 goals and 40 assists for 60 points in 72 games.
While he had some detractors around the league, among teammates and Arizona faithful Doan was known as one of the nicest guys in the league. He was a big part of why the Arizona Coyotes stuck around so long in the desert.
He wasn’t just an off-ice legend, either. By the time he retired, Shane Doan held the franchise records in games played (1540), goals (402), assists (570), and points (972).
Doaner wore this alternate gamer in 13 games in 2010-2011, scoring 6 goals and 7 assists in those contests.
There are a decent amount of visible board burns and marks on this jersey which is pretty remarkable given that it is mostly solid black.
A hallmark of Shane Doan gamers tends to be wear on the right shoulder and this jersey is no exception.
There are a cluster of white board burns there that have been photomatched to multiple shots of Doan throughout the season.
You can also see a couple of burns in the lower sleeves as well, though nothing quite as notable as what is on the shoulders or near the right sleeve numbers.
The “running Coyote” alternates have often been maligned or underrated among jersey collectors and fans.
For many, nothing can touch the kachina, but these alternates remain one of my favorite alternate styles that has popped up in the league.
The design was superb, though I will concede I would have preferred a different crest…even if it had been the original Coyotes crest or some other variation. This coyote crest has many nicknames; running Coyote, leaping Coyote, roadkill, and more. It has been said that it looks more like a dog or a fox than a coyote and that may be the case, but despite preferring a different choice I will say it goes with the aesthetic and doesn’t look out of place.
These jerseys had an excellent look with the black and red and the pants that matched and the paw patch that was on the left shoulder was a mark that the franchise should have utilized more in branding and merchandise.
