Ed McGovern started his college career at Arizona State in the ACHA before the Sun Devils made the jump to Division I hockey in 2015-2016.
The Valley native made the leap with the program and spent two seasons protecting the crease for the maroon and gold.
McGovern was a stay-at-home defenseman who grew up in Scottsdale and played his youth hockey in Arizona. He played in 44 games across two seasons at the Division I level and tallied 2 assists.
While he never scored a goal at the D-1 level, McGovern embraced his blue collar role on the newly elevated Sun Devils roster. In an interview with Cronkite sports, Ed laid out his role. “Getting the puck out of our zone, moving it up to the forwards, just trying to create some offense for them and basically just being safe on the backend.”
Edward McGovern’s White Set game worn jersey is an intriguing one. It appears to have been worn in both the inaugural 2015-2016 season and in 2016-2017. There is at least one photomatch to each season, though most photos of McGovern in this sweater are from the inaugural campaign.
It has pretty solid wear with multiple repairs, some unrepaired holes, stick/puck marks, and loose threading.
The right sleeve has four or five repairs and one unrepaired hole near the hem of the sleeve at the wrist. There are also a few light stick marks on the sleeve. On the left sleeve we have board burns, stick/puck marks, and a few small unrepaired holes.
McGovern’s sweater has multiple stick marks on the front around the crest, as well as stick marks in both armpit areas. The left shoulder also has some marks near the ASU shoulder patch.
An adidas patch covers the CCM patch on the front center of the jersey above the crest. The jersey still has it’s CCM tagging in the neck.
On the back there are some light signs of wear with loose threading and some scuffing of the pitchfork patterns inside the twill of the back numbers. There is also a large stick mark on the left side near the armpit.
The special twill numbers with the embossed pitchforks are the neatest aspect of the early Sun Devils jerseys.
They utilized those numbers in varying ways for two seasons before scrapping them entirely for the 2017-2018 season and going with single-layer twill numbers.
ASU did not have set tags in the early years so there is not one on this jersey.
